THE SUSSEX Football Association officially opened their new 3G surface at Culver Road, Lancing, last night.
Sussex FA chairman Mathew Major was joined by the leading man of the FA, Greg Dyke, for the ceremony.
Work was completed on the pitch back in September, with Brighton & Hove Albion ladies and Lancing playing matches at Culver Road in the past few weeks.
But Tuesday marked the official opening of the surface, with Dyke cutting the ribbon, before Major and the FA chairman conducted speeches.
Dyke was delighted to officially open the Culver Road 3G pitch and said: “I think this is brilliant what has been done here in Lancing.
“The Sussex FA have done this in six months out of nowhere.
“They got the money from a bank, put the surface in and now it can be used all day everyday.
“It has many benefits and if you talk to the players they love playing on it as the ball run is so true.
“This is a great step for Sussex and we want to see many more across the country.”
The project was funded by the Sussex FA with support from Barclays.
After official testing, the surface was issued with FIFA one and two star quality marks.
The total cost was £406,000 and Major is pleased with how it looks.
He said: “It’s the official opening but obviously after work was completed on the second of September we have been living with it for a little while now.
“But we wanted to have a really big event and I’m delighted Greg Dyke was able to come down for it.
“It was a really big day for us down here in Sussex. Greg is a big supporter of this type of service and the 3G allows us a better usage.
“For us at Sussex we have both Lancing and Brighton & Hove Albion ladies playing at Culver Road and this will continue.
““But now we will be able to host Albion in the Community for some well-being projects that they are doing.
“We also have a number of teams across the county using the surface for training sessions.”
