Butler steps down as Arundel boss

SIMON Butler has stepped down as manager of Arundel Football Club due to health reasons.

The Mill Road manager quit his position on Tuesday night on doctors’ advice to aid avoiding any unnecessary anxiety and stress ahead of a minor operation he has coming up.

It comes as a second-recent blow to Mullets, after former joint manager Gary Block, who only joined the club from rivals Wick in the summer, quit the club by mutual consent earlier this month.

With Arundel at the foot of the County League Division 1 table, with four defeats from their four league matches, assistant Dave Berkowitz and chairman Bob Marchant will now take the reigns until a new first-team manager is appointed.

Butler said: “I have totally enjoyed the experience of being both manager and assistant manager at such a friendly and well-run club and have always been made welcome.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better and more supportive chairman than Bob Marchant, for whom I have the utmost respect and I wish both him and the football club my very best wishes for the future.

“I will miss the camaraderie of the players and staff at the club, but I’m not leaving the club totally, only just standing down as manager and will offer my support in other areas of the club if, and when, required.”

Butler leaves his position at the club with the main regret of winning no silverware over the past few years, despite having a strong squad, but said: “I would like to say a big thank-you to the players for their support and effortsover the years I’ve been involved. I know all present players will give both Bob and Dave their full total support as the playing side of the club tries to get back on track.”
