Rajiv van La Parra looked to have decided matters at the iPro Stadium when he scored in the 75th minute to put the Seagulls ahead for the second time, after Manchester United loanee James Wilson’s opener had been cancelled out by Bradley Johnson before the break.

But Martin kept his cool two minutes from time to secure a 2-2 draw by slotting his spot-kick into the bottom-right corner after substitute Johnny Russell appeared to be caught.

Second-placed Middlesbrough could not capitalise, however, as they were held to a scoreless home draw by Birmingham.

Chuba Akpom netted the only goal of the game as Hull boosted their title challenge by toppling bottom side Bolton 1-0. The on-loan Arsenal striker finished clinically in the first half as the hosts lit up a dull and damp afternoon at the KC Stadium.

Sheffield Wednesday battled from two goals down to earn a share of the spoils at fellow play-off hopefuls Cardiff.

Craig Noone put Russell Slade’s side ahead by converting a 21st-minute penalty and Anthony Pilkington doubled their advantage 13 minutes later to put the Bluebirds seemingly in control at the break.

But Fernando Forestieri pulled a goal back just after the half-hour mark and Barry Bannan secured the Owls a 2-2 draw 14 minutes from time.

Brett Pitman’s goal after 10 minutes was enough to hand Ipswich a 1-0 triumph at MK Dons, which moved the Tractor Boys into the top six and saw the visitors slip into the bottom three.

Jack O’Connell’s 71st-minute equaliser secured Brentford a 2-2 draw at Fulham, who were under the guidance of newly appointed senior coach Stuart Gray.

Alan Judge had opened the scoring for the visitors at Craven Cottage but the hosts turned the game on its head through James Tarkowski’s own goal and a Moussa Dembele strike.

Managerless Reading went down 1-0 at Preston, Joe Garner bagging the game’s only goal from the penalty spot seven minutes into the second half.

Bristol City eased themselves away from the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield. Jonathan Kodjia and Aden Flint grabbed the goals - both within the first half-hour - with Harry Bunn notching a late consolation for Town.

The match between Charlton and Leeds at The Valley ended goalless - enough to lift the Addicks out of the drop zone - while QPR and fifth-placed Burnley also drew blanks at Loftus Road.
