She ran the 3,000m steeplechase just hours after taking her regular morning bootcamp class at Goring Gap and said: “It was quite a rush getting to Birmingham on time, but I love my work and think it was good to be busy, rather than worrying about the race.”

As it turned out, the recently crowned South of England champion had little to worry about as she ran a superbly controlled race to take an impressive second place, behind GB international and UK number one, Lennie Waite.

Macready said: “My goal was to hopefully get a medal and I thought a bronze might be possible. As the race progressed and Lennie stretched out the field, I found myself in second place and feeling strong.”

At that stage, Macready had a queue of top athletes behind her and was under great pressure from Welsh international Charlotte Green.

That remained the situation until, with two laps to go, Macready put in a massive surge to open up what was to prove an unassailable lead for the silver, finishing just a few seconds behind Waite.

“I’m overwhelmed,” remarked Emma. “For years I have watched these championships on television and I thought my fifth place last season was as good as it gets. To now get a silver is huge for me – the pinnacle of my sporting career.”

Macready, 34, who will qualify as a ‘masters’ age group athlete next year, attributes her success to concentrating on all-round fitness, not just running.

She also acknowledges the help of her coach, former GB international Mark Whitby and fellow fitness instructor and partner, Martin Footman, in keeping her fit and focussed.

She said: “I’m sharing this success with them, along with all my YNM Fitness friends.”
