Sussex suffer defeat after batting collapse

Sussex had reached lunch on the final day with the loss of just four wickets, at 223-4.

However, they lost their final six wickets in the afternoon session as they slipped to a 178-run loss as they were all out for 335.

After being set a target of 514 to win on the third day, it never looked likely they would get to that but, following an encouraging morning, they had hopes of a draw.

However, a dismal afternoon saw their remaining six wickets fall for 113 runs.

Luke Wells and Luke Wright returned after the break looking to continue their good work from the morning. However, Wells went for 108 when he nicked the ball to Paul Collingwood off Ryan Pringle.

The score at that stage was 242 for five but Wells’ dismissal sparked a batting collapse. Wright was the next man to go in the following over when he was caught and bowled by Scott Borthwick for 49.

It did not get any better for Sussex as Ajmal Shahzad (two) and George Dockrell (nought) became Borthwick’s second and third victims.

Once Dockrell fell with the score on 256, it meant that Sussex had lost four wickets for just 14 runs to spin after the lunch break.

Ben Brown did offer some resistance as he reached a half-century.

Steve Magoffin went for a duck when he was caught at third slip by Gordon Muchall off Graham Onions.

Brown and Tim Linley (21 not out) did look as though they would force a final session but Brown was trapped leg before by Borthwick for 60.

Borthwick was the star man with the ball for Durham and ended with figures of 4-46.
