STEYNING Cricket Club clinched the Sussex League Division 4 title on Saturday with a 21-run victory over Wisborough Green.
Steyning have enjoyed an outstanding campaign and Saturday’s win was their 15th from 17 league games, although they had to recover from 88-9 to post 168-9 from their 53 overs.
Steyning then dismissed their visitors for 147 and skipper David Kennett said: “It’s been an excellent season for us and was just the response I was looking for from my players after a disappointing season last time out.
“For us to win the league so dominantly just shows the character of my team.
“We will take the momentum into next season and will be aiming for back-to-back promotions.”
After being put into bat, Steyning started well with openers Owain Jones (22) and Hywel Jones (38) making good scores.
However, Steyning then lost Ben Shelford (two), Gary Hunt (two) and Kennett (nought) as their middle-order struggled.
Ed Lamb finished on 62 not out and number 11 Sam Sutterlin struck 20 not out as Steyning finished on 168-9 from 53 overs.
Rajesh Maru was the pick of the Wisborough bowlers as he claimed 6-48 and Ben Thatcher took two wickets.
Steyning began well with the ball as they dismissed Wisborough openers Martin Hopkins (five) and Daniel Vickery (three) early on.
Ben Tracy (35) and Gregg Marshall (37) offered some hope for Wisborough but wickets then fell at regular intervals as they were all out for 147.
Owain Jones led the way with 6-43 from 12.1 overs and Andy Issacs picked up 3-45 from 17 overs.
Kennett added: “Ed Lamb was fantastic with the bat and timed his innings to perfection, with some excellent support from 15-year-old Sam Sutterlin, who was also fantastic with the bat.
“Sam, in particular, was brilliant and showed what a promising young talent he is, under some real pressure.
“With the ball, we got off to great start. Owain Jones was again the star as he took out their top five batsmen.
“Andy Isaacs also bowled very well and got his rewards in the end.”
