Worthing Cricket Club started their 2021 season with a three-wicket friendly win over neighbours Chipps at the Manor.

Having lost the toss and been asked to field, Worthing restricted their opposition to 203-7 off 40 overs, with three wickets for skipper Harry Dunn and two apiece for Giorgio Rigali and 15-year-old Harry Merritt-Blann. Both Dan Robinson and Aaron Tugnutt passed 50 for Chipps. In reply, Worthing got off to the best possible start as Dunn (44) and Aden-Jay Wood (41) put on 82 for the first wicket. Despite a slight middle order wobble, the hosts got home with three wickets and two overs to spare with help from Josh Kirk (37) and Kian Shorter (31 not out).

Captain Harry Dunn was happy with his team’s first display of the season. “A really good team performance all round from a team that hasn’t played very much cricket at all over the past couple of years,” he said. “We started well with the ball and Giorgio was unlucky not to get a few more wickets passing the bat on many occasions. The rest of the seamers backed him up nicely which wasn’t always easy in the heavy wind. We did well to restrict them to 200 as we only had ten men for the last ten overs.

“As with any run chase it always help to get off to a good start and although there was a small collapse, Kian and Harry played brilliantly to get us over the line. All in all it was a successful warm up and a lot of positives to take going into the season.”

Worthing host Preston Nomads in the first round of the T20 cup competition on Saturday and look set to have new signings Rohan Ryan and Jack Perman available for that. Their first league game is away to Goring the following week. Other local sides are also due in T20 Cup action on Saturday.
