STEYNING Cricket Club captain David Kennett is looking for a response from his team, after their first defeat of the season on Saturday.
Steyning won their opening seven games of the Sussex League Division 4 season – all with the maximum 30-point return – to comfortably lead the table.
Their following match, at Wisborough Green, was cancelled owing to the weather, before Steyning returned to winning ways, with victory over Crawley last week.
Despite defeat to Portslade, Steyning are still 56 points clear at the top and 63 points ahead of third-placed Henfield, who Steyning host on Saturday.
Kennett said: “We still have a nice gap at the top, so we are not too concerned but I’ll be looking for a response from my team this week, when we entertain Henfield and will look to bounce back.”
On his side’s unbeaten run coming to an end, Kennett said: “We are disappointed to lose our unbeaten run but we have no complaints, Portslade were better on the day and we just didn’t turn up.
“We played some pretty average shots and a few of us gave our wickets away, which was frustrating. We could have bowled better than we did but we didn’t get much luck in the field.”
