Hugh captains England to Ashes glory in Australia

Milner, who was also England’s manager, guided England to victory as they took part in three one-day internationals and five State games in the Seevent 70-plus competition.

England began with a 59-run win over Queensland City, before they overcame Queensland Country XI by 20 runs.

In the next game – the first Test match – against Australia at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, England won on a faster run-rate. After posting 279-3 from their 50 overs, a run-rate of 5.58, Australia were 172-2 off 35 overs, a 4.91 run-rate, when a thunderstorm struck.

The following match was a four-wicket defeat to New South Wales City XI, before the game with New South Wales Country XI was abandoned because of flooding.

Australia levelled the Test series with a nine-wicket win at North Sydney Oval but England bounced back with a five-wicket victory over ACT 70-plus Invitation XI.

In the Ashes decider, England triumphed by 115 runs at the Manuka Oval, Canberra. They posted 271-8 from their 50 overs, before Australia were dismissed for 156 in 44 overs.

Milner said: “As manager and captain of the England tourists, I spent a tremendous amount of time in planning every aspect of the tour to ensure that success on the field was met by efficient support off the field.

“I am pleased to say that my efforts, sleepless nights, before, during and after Australia, were well worth the effort as England retained the Seevent 70-plus Ashes.

“I have said this many times, it is an honour to play for your county at whatever level but to be selected for England, and as captain, has been the peak of my cricketing career.

“Undefeated in the Ashes series in England in 2013 and now winners in Australia – it can’t get better.”
