Ed guides Steyning to victory at Hill

Steyning won by three wickets at Burgess Hill, after a two-wicket victory against Rottingdean the previous week as they remain fifth in the table.

They had it all to do after the first innings, though, as Burgess Hill declared on 250-7 in 49.3 overs.

Steyning slipped to 60-4 and 142-6. However, captain David Kennett and Ed Lamb got their side back into the match with an 80-run stand, before Lamb, who finished unbeaten on 61, saw Steyning over the line with Luke Chapman.

Kennett said: “It was a really good win for us on Saturday.

“The outfield was really quick and, with short boundaries, we knew we would have a chance.

“As a team, we felt restricting them to 250 or less would have been reachable.

“Obviously, we made a dreadful start with the bat and it looked unlikely.

“However, myself and Toby Glover got us back on track and then Ed’s fine unbeaten knock got us over the winning line.”

Burgess Hill batted first after winning the toss and Tom Trowbridge and Jack Simpson put on 112 for the opening wicket to give their side a solid platform.

Simpson was first to fall for 57, before Trowbridge was out lbw to Lamb for 58, with the score on 149.

Kirk Proto added 48 and Nathan Cooper hit 44, from just 45 balls, as Burgess Hill declared on 250-7.

Owain Jones claimed 3-53 from ten overs for Steyning and Lamb picked up 3-56.

Steyning struggled at the beginning of their reply as Jones (eight), Ryan Matthews (12), Oliver Collins (18) and Stephen Chimhamhiwa (15) all fell cheaply as Steyning were reduced to 60-4.

Kennett and Glover gave their side some hope as they shared a sixth-wicket stand of 80, before Glover (42) and Gary Hunt (one) fell in quick succession to leave Steyning 142-6.

Kennett struck 12 fours from 77 balls as he hit 66, before he was seventh man out with the score on 222.

However, Lamb and Chapman saw Steyning home with a 29-run stand. Lamb finished unbeaten on 61, from just 50 balls, in an innings which included ten fours and one six, while Chapman blasted 15 from only seven deliveries.
