Cricket: Sussex set Essex big last-day run chase

Ajmal Shahzad halted a promising innings by Ravi Bopara on the stroke of lunch to give Sussex the edge on the final day of their Specsavers County Championship game against Essex at Hove.

Bopara, who earlier passed 10,000 first-class runs, was caught by Matt Machan diving forward from the deep square leg boundary for 30 as Essex reached 80 for 3 in pursuit of a target of 329 in 91 overs.

Alastair Cook was unbeaten on 28 after a torrid start to his innings. He was dropped at slip by Danny Briggs on one and then surviving Steve Magoffin’s confident lbw appeal on four.

Magoffin picked up Nick Browne in his new-ball spell and Ollie Robinson benefitted from a change of ends to have Tom Westley lbw for 16.

Earlier, Jamie Porter had completed his maiden five-wicket haul when he removed Shahzad as Sussex were dismissed for 288. He finished with 5 for 82 while Graham Napier had figures of 5 for 92.
