Sussex ended the day 277 runs ahead of Derbyshire - see day two report here.

Joyce said: “It feels amazing, we had to battle really hard in the first session when they bowled well and it’s one of those pitches where if you lose a wicket it’s very hard to start so getting to lunch without losing a wicket was a big part of the game.

“We started really well after lunch and scored more freely. It’s the sort of wicket where if you bowl badly and you get some overs into the legs of the bowlers it’s much easier to play and we accelerated really hard towards the end. I got a bit tired around 150 but I was seeing it really well and started getting some bad balls so I’m absolutely chuffed because I didn’t go into this game feeling like I was going to get a big score.”

Derbyshire wicket-keeper Tom Poynton said: “We had to toil away all day and there wasn’t the assistance there was on the first day when we batted. We created a few chances early on but unfortunately it didn’t stick, Hamish had it in his hands and then it popped out but credit to the way they played, they batted for a long time and ground us into the dirt. Well played to Ed, he’s a class act and has been for many years.

“But the pitch is good to bat on now so hopefully when we get our chance we have to really apply ourselves and dig in.”
