Make your own Great British Bunting to brighten up your street
A national children’s charity wants everyone to support a big VE Day anniversary campaign - by making bunting.
Caudwell Children, that provides support to disabled children and their families, is urging the public to join them and the BBC to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, on May 8, 2020.
The day celebrates the formal acceptance by the Allies, of Germany’s unconditional surrender at the end of World War Two.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic most events and street parties that had been planned to mark the occasion are cancelled or postponed.
However, the BBC still want people to share their pride in the country, and honour the men and women of World War Two.
To do this the corporation has created Great British Bunting, whereby people can download the BBC Bunting template to create their own, colourful, VE Day 75 bunting to hang in their windows and cheer up their street and neighbourhood.
“This is a fabulous initiative,” said Mark Bushell from Caudwell Children.“The BBC are giving people all the instructions that they need to get started, using any paper, cereal boxes, string, ribbon, sweet wrappers, felt pens, poster paints they have, or whatever materials they can find.”
He added: “Caudwell Children has been supporting disabled children and their families for over 20 years, and this experience has helped us to appreciate the feelings of boredom, and restlessness, that can arise out of long periods of isolation in the home.
“So having something creative to do, to mark this occasion, is a fantastic way to keep children occupied at what is a difficult time.”
The bunting can be decorated with pictures of whatever inspires you, whether it’s those who fought on the frontline or people who worked hard on the Homefront. Or it could be to celebrate enduring peace or your own personal hero.
The BBC wants people to hang their bunting with pride over the weekend of Friday, May 8 to Sunday, May 10, and remember to share your pictures widely on social media using the hashtags #GreatBritishBunting, #VEDay75 and #BBCMakeaDifference.
