Youth Speaks semi-final prize for Shoreham team

Students Alasdair Tennent, Maddy O’Meara and Erin Campbell competed against five other schools at Oathall Community College in Haywards Heath.

Their bold and challenging presentation was praised by the adjudicators and Maddy was awarded the prize for best vote of thanks.

The overall winner, with a well-researched presentation on George’s Marvellous Measles, was Burgess Hill Girls.

The Shoreham College team was supported by Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club, having beaten Brighton and Hove High School and The Towers in the local round.

President Liz Box and six members joined the launch audience for the semi-final.

Rotarian Les Baker said: “We enjoyed some very interesting and thought-provoking presentations from all the schools.

“The adjudicators said it was an extremely difficult competition to judge as the quality of each presentation was so close.”

Frank West, Rotary district governor, presented individual prizes for best chairman, best speaker and best vote of thanks, as well as the overall winning team.

He said every year, he was amazed by the high standard achieved by all of the schools.

He thanked the schools for supporting the competition, giving the students a chance to compete in an activity that would be of great value to them in their future, as the self confidence it build would remain with them and help in their future careers.
