Worthing is a pleasant town as described in a recently published letter and I wish Worthing Borough Council well with their new website to promote tourism.
However, the surrounding area is not a good advertisement at all. My sister in law, driving through from Portsmouth, where she lives, to Bexhill, was so appalled at how unkempt and neglected the uncut verges and overgrown roundabouts are in our area that she phoned especially to tell me!
Hampshire authorities must take an entirely different view of the care of local areas for her to see such a marked contrast. I know the responsibility lies with West Sussex Highways and they keep maintenance to a minimum, which I also know because they told me so themselves. Last year I pointed out to the councillor for the Broadwater area that the roundabout at the junction of the A24/A27 is where visitors get their first impression of Worthing and it is usually a jungle. I had no reply. It would be refreshing to see our roadsides looking cared for again.
