Some of the shops in Southwick Square – which have standard rent reviews every five years – have had to pay an overall rent increase of only around £500 over the past 10 years.
Furthermore, rent reviews in 2009 were postponed by the council to help traders during the recession.
Most of the commentary is pure scaremongering.
Adur Council has, in fact, just spent £50,000 renovating the canopy at the square. We haven’t received any complaints about the lack of road sweeping and rubbish clearance and the flower bed pictured is outside of the council’s responsibility.
We – officers and councillors – would be very happy to meet and work alongside the traders to make the square the best that it can be for the local community.
