LETTER: Right to vote

Your feature “MPs disagree on 16 and 17-year-olds having vote on EU” contrasts markedly with the two ill-informed letters from UKIP members in last week’s Herald (July 2).

It is, furthermore, astonishing that you report one Conservative MP argues: “the priority must be to get more young people turning out to vote, before having a debate about reducing the voting age.”

How is denying any responsible section of the population the right to vote democratic?

If Scottish MSPs can give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote in the Scottish referendum (and they turned out in considerable numbers), why can’t Westminster MPs do the same in the case of the EU referendum?

Young people have a better idea of the country and Europe they want to have and run.

They should not be denied the chance to determine their own future by eurosceptics.
