A group from year five was given the chance to work under the baton of the esteemed conductor David Lawrence at Christ’s Hospital, Horsham.

It was a truly inspirational day for the children, who were really put through their paces in a fast-paced workshop.

Corrine Wellby, music co-ordinator at Upper Beeding Primary, said: “David Lawrence is not an unfamiliar face to the children. Back in January, the children also took part in the Young Voices concert at the London O2 arena, which he also conducted.

“This concert saw a mass choir of approximately 8,000 children across the south east and featured the street dance group Urban Strides and a performance by the European beatboxing champions.

“Under his leadership, the children learned a variety of challenging songs, which they memorised and performed to an audience of parents and Christ Hospital teachers.

“The songs were taught in quick succession – there was definitely no time for slacking.”

The children revisited a song previously learned for the O2 concert, entitled Stronger Together, an inspirational song which was originally sung by Gareth Malone’s Military Wives.

They were also given a sneak preview of a song which will be featured among next year’s O2 repertoire, called Why We Sing, and in keeping with St Patrick’s Day, sung the beautiful Song for Ireland.

Corrine added: “The children had a memorable day and were hugely disappointed when it came to an end.

“Their enthusiasm and energy for singing was clear throughout the day. In the beautiful surroundings of the school’s chapel, the children were mesmerised by David Lawrence’s energy and love of singing. There was never a dull moment.”
