Candidates must have been resident within the boundaries of Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate for three years prior to January 1, 2016, and been born after December 31, 1992.

Adur East Lions Club is hosting the local competition for talented grade eight violinists in the autumn, around October/November.

The winner will go on to take part in a district final, hosted by the Lions’ Multiple District 105, in early December.

Lion Frances Burt said: “We have one candidate so far, who would love others to enter the competition.

“Her name is Amy-Jo Gilbert and she will be 12 next month.”

Amy-Jo was a pupil at St Nicolas and St Mary CE Primary School in Eastern Avenue, Shoreham, before winning a scholarship to attend The Purcell School in Hertfordshire.

She is resident at the school from Monday to Friday, then travels to London on Saturday to attend the Royal College of Music.

Dad Jon Gilbert said: “This will be a great opportunity for Amy to perform against others in the competition.”

Amy-Jo added: “I am grateful to the Lions for giving me this opportunity.”

She has been a leading member of West Sussex Music’s Worthing Music Centre and a violinist in the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra.

Specialist tuition from Andrew Bernardi has given her the foundations to follow her dream and she has performed alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall.

James Underwood, head of West Sussex Music, said: “We know that Amy’s story will inspire other budding young musicians.”

Nominations for the local heat of the Lions Clubs International’s European Music Competition should be sent to Susan Saunders by email to [email protected] or telephone 0845 833 7356.

The Multiple District 105 winner, which will be decided in April next year, will represent Britain and Ireland at the Europa final in Sofia, Bulgaria, in late 2016.
