Wit-knits, who boast to having more knit than wit, is, in fact, a small group of avid knitters who meet every week to share their love of yarn.

Organised by the Sompting Big Local (SBL) - a community focused organisation run by the Local Trust - the Yarn Bomb is a craze that has taken the UK by storm in an attempt to bring colour into its towns and villages.

SBL co-ordinator Jacqui Matten said the self-funding activity which plans to decorate bollards, trees and other objects across Sompting has been an uplifting project for the locals who attend.

“We have some ladies who struggle to walk anywhere, but this just brightens up their day,” she said.

However, the club has not been without its controversy. Members decorated six bollards outside the club premises in Cokeham Parade with fluorescent strips to make them more visible at night time, but were asked to remove them by Sussex Police for not meeting regulations.

Jacqui said: “It won’t be long before someone gets hurt or a car is damaged by these.”

Now the decorations adorn the bollards outside the local One Stop on the same road.

The club is also attended by men and young people. You do not need to be an expert.

Wit-knits meet every Thursday at 7.30pm, at the Sompting Big Local, Cokeham Parade. Call 01903 905899 for more details.
