Worthing Hospital team has its eye on the prize

PATIENT praise has led to a team of eye specialists at Worthing Hospital being nominated for a national award.

Chee Kon, consultant ophthalmologist for Western Sussex Hospitals Trust, and the eye clinic team are in the running for the Clinical Service of the Year award as part of the Macular Disease Society 25th Anniversary Awards for Excellence.

The nomination recognises the team’s exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular disease.

Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.

Mr Kon said: “We’re all surprised and delighted to be nominated for this award. Our team always works hard to do the best for our patients and it’s heartening to receive such praise.”

Beryl Turrell, a patient who nominated the team, said: “The whole team has been very kind to me after being diagnosed with macular degeneration and subsequent injections in my left eye. The care was so good I didn’t worry about the injections after the first experience. I couldn’t have received better treatment and help.”

The judges will present the overall winners with their awards at the society’s annual London conference on September 22.
