Worthing flat fire: pictures show emergency response

Firefighters have been called to a flat fire in Worthing.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said they were called to the block of flats off Stoke Abbot Road in Worthing at 11.49am this morning. Three fire engines from Worthing were sent to the scene and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one high pressure hose reel and one covering jet to tackle the fire. All residents had evacuated the building before they arrived, and everyone was accounted for: but nearby residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed. At just after 3pm, they said one crew from Worthing Fire Station remained at the scene, and officers were working with the Red Cross to support residents impacted by the fire. The spokesman added that ‘early indications’ suggested a candle was the cause. They said: “Firefighters would like to urge all residents to remain vigilant when lighting candles. Please do not leave them unattended and ensure that they are kept away from any flammable materials and fabrics.”
