The UK Street Velodrome Series will see Beach House Grounds, adjacent to Splashpoint Leisure Centre, come alive with a street velodrome installed.

“We have a new story to tell in Worthing; hosting unique, innovative events such as the UK-wide Asda StreetVelodrome Series really underlines where we’re heading and the passion that we’re using to get us there,” said Worthing Borough Council leader Daniel Humphreys.

“It’s taken a huge amount of effort for the team to bring StreetVelodrome to Worthing this year, and I’m confident that the first weekend of August is going to be a spectacular cycling celebration, from the arrival of the peloton on Saturday to the race action that will dominate the weekend.”

Councillor Bryan Turner, executive member for regeneration at Worthing Borough Council added: “When the council decided to bring the Asda StreetVelodrome Series to the town last December, we couldn’t imagine the speed at which the local community would back it.

“According to the organisers, no other race venue has seen such immediate uptake of the track time slots and even our culture and events team were taken aback by the speed at which local businesses invested in sponsorship opportunities.

“Events such as this not only contribute to the social lifeblood of the town, but also have a direct relationship with the whole area’s economic growth and development. I am personally passionate about growing Worthing’s economy, and will wholeheartedly support bringing the right events to the town to do just that.”

Organisers said there was a packed programme of races planned for both days, involving some of the country’s best pro riders including Craig MacLean MBE Olympic cyclist and Anna Glowinski, presenter of ITV4’s The Cycling Show.

Worthing is the fifth and penultimate round of the 2015 UK Street Velodrome Series, with the final being held in London.

Further information on the track timetable and the pro riders taking part can be found at streetvelodrome.co.uk.

As well as being able to spectate, there are lots of other attractions over the entire weekend.

The event is open from 10am until 6pm both days, and on both mornings there will be a pelaton of cyclists arriving at the event, having gathered and cycled from East Worthing.

The Saturday will involve a cruise for families with their children, and Sunday will see a collection of bespoke, vintage, custom, classic and modified bikes cruising their way to the event.

Over the weekend, CircusSeen will be on site demonstrating their circus skills, performing unicycle tricks and offering slack line lessons. Within Denton Gardens there will be several large inflatables for children as well as the opportunity to play pitch-and-putt or grab an ice cream from one of the vans on site.

Don’t worry if you’ve missed the ballot to sign up for a race on the velodrome,” said a council spokesman. “There are have-a-go sessions available at various times in the day.
