Tom Freer’s work, Rampion (Pride of Sussex), depicts the wind turbines currenlty being constructed between Peaceheven and Worthing. Mr Freer, 43, who works out of East Beach Studios along the seafront, says painting the turbines helps him come to terms with their presence.

He said: “I’ve always tried to think about the beauty in controversial landmarks, as a way of helping myself to deal with them. My studio looks out over the wind farm and rather than get frustrated with the spoilt horizon, I can now watch the turbines grow and feel better about them.”

While the creation of the windfarm may be controversial, Mr Freer said: “If renewable energy is to be taken seriously and climate change addressed, then I’m proud that we can hold our heads up and say we’re doing something positive”.

When completed, 116 turbines will be visible from several locations around Sussex, including Brighton beach and the South Downs National Park.

Onshore work began, including the laying of underground cables on Upper Brighton Road, in January.

It is expected the new windfarm will produce electricity for up 300,000 homes.
