West Sussex Trading Standards issues septic tank warning

RESIDENTS with septic tanks are being warned by West Sussex County Council Trading Standards Service and the Environment Agency to beware of companies encouraging them to register their tank for a fee.

Pete Bradbury, West Sussex County Council member for public protection, said: “The requirement to have a registration with the Environment Agency is currently under review in England and in most cases is not necessary.

“Under some limited circumstances – for example, the tank’s contents goes into a stream where there are protected species – permits may be required and there may be a fee to pay.

“However, for the majority in this review period any registration would be voluntary and free.”
