West Sussex Firefighters sent to Japan following devastating earthquake
WEST Sussex firefighters have been sent to Japan to help in the aftermath of one of the most devastating earthquakes on record.
The UK team of firefighters, search dogs, and medical teams have arrived at the US airbase in Misawa, northern Japan, where they will join with the United States’ urban search and rescue teams from Fairfax County and Los Angeles County.
The UK team includes six members of the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service technical rescue unit, two of which returned from Christchurch, New Zealand, less than two weeks ago.
An 8.9 richter scale earthquake struck Japan on Friday, March 11, causing a 30ft tsunami.
Currently, more than 10,000 people are missing.
