WEATHER: Area battered by gale-force winds and heavy rain

From Shoreham to Littlehampton, large amounts of stone were carried from the beach on to roads and walkways, causing disruption to those travelling by car through the area.

In Brighton Road, by Brooklands Pleasure Park in Worthing, two lanes were reduced to one because of the huge amount of stones covering the surface of the road.

In Lancing, Grinstead Lane, just off the Lancing Manor roundabout on the A27, was once again closed because of flooding.

Worthing’s Pier also had to be closed today because of dangerous high winds of around 40 knots.

Adur and Worthing councils said they were hoping to re-open the pier tomorrow.

The weather has also been causing disruption to rail travel, with many trains going to Littlehampton being delayed or cancelled because of flooding.

In Shoreham, winds were recorded at speeds of up to 79 miles per hour.

Flooding also meant much of the area around Shoreham Port was flooded.

Flood alerts

The Environment Agency has also issued flood alerts for the area today.

The water level of the Lower Arun is rising in the Pulborough, Houghton Bridge and Arundel areas.

High tide at Littlehampton is at 11.45am.

The EA said tide locking on the Lower Arun may occur for three hours after high tide.

River levels are forecast to peak at Pulborough at 10pm today.

The EA said: “We have staff in the area to operate the pumps on Swan Bridge.

“The forecast for the rest of Saturday is for scattered, blustery showers.

“The forecast for Sunday is for a predominantly dry day.

“This will allow the river level to drop overnight and into Sunday. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will update this message as the situation changes.”

Wind warnings

On Friday the Met Office issued an amber wind warning – the second most serious classification of warning – for the whole of West Sussex, warning of winds of between 60 and 70 miles per hour, with gusts up to 80 miles per hour.

The Met Office said the wind would ease from Saturday morning.

But as of Saturday, it had issued a yellow warning for rain, which warns people to be aware of the possibility of heavy rain.

The Met Office added: “The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel as well as trees being uprooted. The very strong winds will be accompanied by large waves along the south coast and the public should be aware of potentially dangerous conditions and also the possibility of coastal flooding.”
