Walking off Christmas indulgences

WALK off those Christmas indulgences with an annual stroll over the South Downs.

The traditional West Sussex Christmas Walk will take place on Friday, December 27, at 10.30am, starting this year from the Fletchers Croft car park, opposite St Andrew’s Church in Steyning.

The walk is being organised by Footprints of Sussex and is open to everyone who likes the idea of some fresh air and gentle exercise after the Christmas festivities.

Keith McKenna, from Footprints, will be leading the walk this year.

He said: “ Everyone tends to think of walking the downs only in summer but our best attended walk of the year is always this one.

“If the weather is kind and you wrap up well, then walking the South Downs in winter is a great experience; the air is crisper, the views are better and you come back with a lovely warm glow.”

The six-mile route will go out past Wiston House, then up on to the downs near Chanctonbury Ring and return along the South Downs Way National Trail.

The walk is expected to finish back in Steyning by 1.15 pm and Footprints will be laying on mince pies and hot mulled wine at the Steyning Centre for everyone after the walk.

There is no need to book. Simply turn up in Steyning on the morning, in good time for a prompt start.

A £2 contribution towards the hire of the hall, etc., would be appreciated.
