Worthing Skywatchers gathered on the seafront with specially-adapted cameras from 7.30am but looked set to be disappointed as thick clouds blocked the sun for most of the morning.

But they got lucky after 10.15am, as the clouds broke just enough to capture images and video footage of the partial eclipse.

Steve Bassett, of Worthing Skywatchers said: “It started appearing through the clouds at about 10:20am and then was in and out right up to the end.

“20 mins after it finished it was blue skies - typical”

Freelance photographer Eddie Mitchell caught the event on camera and can be viewed in the video above.

Worthing Skywatchers members had travelled to Devon and the Faroe Islands in a hope to catch a better sight.

The eclipse was billed as the best seen in the UK since 1999, when millions gathered around the country to view it.
