The draft Joint Minerals Local Plan, put together by West Sussex County Council, sets out a vision for how minerals will be produced, supplied and transported in the county until 2033.

According to West Sussex County Council, this was published prior to its submission to the Secretary of State to allow for representations on the plan’s ‘soundness’ to be made.

The representation period closed on Monday and WSCC has said it is reviewing the responses.

Steyning resident and business owner Katherine Lawrie opposed the quarry as she said it would have a ‘huge impact’ on her life.

She said: “We live so close to it on such a busy main road.

“We like living where we live and we want people to respect that.”

A council spokesman said any representation which suggests changes will be considered before proceeding with the final plan.

The plan is expected to be heard at an examination between July and October 2017.

If the document is considered ‘sound’ by the inspector, it is anticipated that the authorities will adopt the plan in May 2018, according to the council.
