VIDEO: Pedestrian hurt as car ploughs on to pavement

A CAR ploughed on to the pavement in Shoreham High Street last night, leaving a pedestrian with a serious leg injury.

The car collided with a 69-year old Arundel man walking along the street just before 7.30pm last night.

The accident closed the road while Shoreham firefighters made the scene safe.

Police are seeking witnesses to the crash, involving a maroon Toyota Avensis saloon.

The car left the road just past the Norfolk Bridge roundabout, colliding with a post box and the frontage of an opticians.

The man who had been walking along the pavement was trapped between the car and the building.

He was freed and taken to Worthing Hospital, where police said he is currently in a serious but not life-threatening condition, suffering from a leg injury.

The 42-year old Brighton man driving the car was treated at the same hospital for shock and cuts.

Two teenage passengers in the car, a 13-year old boy and 14-year old girl, were not injured.

Inspector Paul Wood of the Sussex Road Policing Unit at Arundel said: “Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call us on 101 or email [email protected] quoting serial 1351 of 21/11.”
