A NEW barbershop in Shoreham is carrying on a long-standing tradition in the town.
Following the closure of Marshall Hairdressing in Gordon Road, barber Kate Stanley has set up on her own just down the road.
She said it was an end of an era when the keys for Marshall Hairdressing were handed back on New Year’s Eve, the barber shop’s 60th anniversary.
But she was carrying on the traditions handed down to her by the man who set it up, Graham Marshall, having worked there with both him and his son for 30 years.
She was 13 when she started as a Saturday girl and later learned cutting from Mr Marshall.
“I was sweeping and making the tea, and washing Mr Marshall’s car,” said Kate. “That was always part of the job – once you got that right, you were set. He had all his apprentices washing his car.”
After Mr Marshall died some years ago, his son Clive continued to run the barbershop until the end of last year, when the building’s owners decided to redevelop the property as flats.
Kate said: “Clive and his wife have been great. We had to clear out the place on Christmas Eve and they let me have all the chairs and the sinks. It was lovely.
“I have even got the original barbers’ pole. Clive has helped me with many different things, giving me lots of advice.”
She said it had been like a family at Gordon Road, with her working downstairs and Clive working upstairs with another barber, Kevin.
“Clive was worried about us continuing on. Kevin is now working over the road from me at Nu-Image and Clive is working from home.”
Kate opened Brunswick Barbers, opposite the main post office, on January 5.
“All over Christmas, apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day, we were painting and decorating,” said Kate. “My customers were coming past and seeing us through the window, so they knew where I was. It is brilliant, they have been really supportive. It has been quite a talking point.
“I have been really busy with both old and new customers, and there has been loads of really positive feedback. It is a better location here, too.”
Brunswick Barbers is open 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with extended opening to 7pm Thursday, and 8.30am to 1pm Saturday.
