The ticket machines in the Liverpool Road car park, behind TK Maxx, stopped working around 2pm yesterday (July 22).

A spokesman for the car park management company CP Plus said one machine was working today, and people could pay for their parking online.

“Whilst the machines are not working motorists can pay by phone or pay on-line anytime up until midnight.

“In addition, one machine will be operational this morning (July 23).”

While there are no barriers in the car park stopping cars from exiting, number plate recognition cameras will detect those leaving the site without paying - leaving them with a hefty fine.

Some people were able use a credit card to pay for their parking, however neither of the two machines were accepting coins throughout the afternoon - causing problems for those who did not have cards.

One mother said she had to collect her children from school, but was stuck in the car park yesterday.

Speaking yesterday, Worthing resident Mick Stent said he was furious.

“Only one machine is taking cards. You face a £90 fine if you drive out the car park,” said Mr Stent.

“Some people have had to leave to collect their children from school, so will now get a fine.

“And people haven’t been able to get through to the contact number.”

Brian McCullough said he was unable to get through on the contact number printed on his car parking ticket.

“I’ve been here around ten minutes, but the queue is not moving.”

He said as people were waiting to pay for their parking and exit the car park, it was costing them more money.

He added: “The phone number is a London number - they’re not going to care.

“The council say it’s nothing to do with them, it’s a private car park.”

Stephen Garment added: “Some people may have only paid 50p for their parking, but now that is going to go up.”
