UPDATE: Several injured and severe disruption after bus crash

A bus crash which left five people seriously injured this morning (July 6), is causing severe disruption to public transport.

Two Brighton and Hove buses collided in North Street, Brighton, just before 9.22am.

Sussex Police declared a major incident, and fire engines, paramedics, and the air ambulance was called to the scene.

Police said two people have suffered “life-threatening injuries” and three have been seriously injured.

There were also several people “walking wounded”, following the crash.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service said it treated 23 patients in total, and there were seven ambulances and four response cars at the scene, alongside its Hazardous Area Response Team, and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance.

Seven patients were taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, including two with very serious injuries.

A further six patients were taken to Princess Royal in Haywards Heath.

The Brighton and Hove Bus Company, said, “Due to an accident in North Street and an air ambulance landing in West Street, serious disruption is affecting all bus routes.

“The diversion for buses going westbound is via Coast Road as far as Holland Road, Hove, then joining normal route from Palmeira Square, we are unable to serve bus stops from North Street to Brunswick Square.

“The diversion for eastbound buses is from Churchill Square via Queens Road, North Road and Grand Parade to Old Steine and then normal route. “Buses from Brighton Station southbound will operate North Road and Grand Parade to Old Steine and then normal route. Northbound buses will operate via Church Street and North Road to Queens Road.
