Crews were called to the scene at 7.30 this morning (Thursday, July 30) and judging by the scale of the fire, are expected to remain at the site for “a considerable time”.

Five fire appliances from across East and West Sussex attended on site, including two water carriers.

As of 2.30pm, two fire engines with relief crews from Hailsham and Hove, along with the water bowser from Uckfield, remained at the scene.

Firefighters are using hose reels and ground monitors to control the fire in a barn measuring approximately 130 metres by 25 metres. It is now thought 3,000 bales of hay are involved, which could take 24-48 hours to extinguish.

There are no reports of injuries and it is not believed any animals are involved. The Environment Agency has been called in to check that the water running off from the scene is not going to pollute local water courses.
