UPDATE: Man hit by train dies

The man who was hit by a train at East Worthing railway station has died, according to British Transport Police.

A spokesperson from British Transport Police said they were called at just before 11.20am following a report of a person hit by a train. They went on to say: “Officers from British Transport Police and Sussex Police attended the incident, alongside colleagues from the ambulance service.

“A man has been pronounced dead at the scene and officers are now working to identify the man and inform his family.

“The incident is not believed to be suspicious.”

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said that a member of the public called them at 11.15am to say that a young man, believed to be in his early twenties, had been hit by the train.

According to the spokesperson one ambulance and four cars were in attendance and an air ambulance was briefly at the scene.

They said the man was unable to be resuscitated and confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Southern Railway has said lines are now reopened between Littlehampton and Brighton which were blocked earlier due to the incident.

A spokesperson for Southern said that ‘power was cut to the line while emergency services attended the scene’.

“The current was recharged at 12.37pm and normal working resumed at 12.46pm. Services are forecast to return to normal later this afternoon.”

Southern’s twitter account said that residual delays should be expected while the service is restored and all train tickets are still being accepted on Brighton and Hove Buses and Stagecoach buses at Littlehampton and Brighton.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a crew was assisting South East Coast Ambulance Service at the scene.
