UPDATE: Custody extended for Littlehampton murder suspects

ELEVEN people have had their time in custody extended as detectives investigate the murder of a man in Littlehampton on Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, police have also revealed they have not yet been able to contact the man’s parents to inform them of his death.

The group, who were arrested on Christmas Day, appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court this morning (December 27), when officers applied to have their time in custody extended to allow them to continue their investigations.

A twelth person who was also arrested at the same time, a 32-year-old woman from Littlehampton, was today released on bail.

Officers were called to Beach Road at about 9pm on Christmas Day after a 38-year-old Lithuanian man was stabbed there. Earlier today, a post-mortem revealed he died of a single stab wound to his heart.

DCI Jeff Riley, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, is now leading the investigation.

He said: “We are making every effort to trace this man’s parents to pass on this tragic news.

“We believe the people are known to each other and come from a tight-knit community. I would urge anyone from that community to come forward with information.

“Custody time has been extended to allow us to continue to progress the investigation and carry out further interviews in relation to the circumstances surrounding this man’s death.

“Extensive enquiries are being made and uniformed officers are be in Littlehampton speaking to people and urging anyone with information to come forward.”
