Ukulele group to join guitarist for next Shoreham gig

COMPOSER and guitarist Richard Durrant returns to Ropetackle in Shoreham this month with a show of many strings.

The maverick musician, who lives on Shoreham Beach, will be playing solos on his concert guitar and showing off his latest love – the tenor guitar.

“The four strings of the tenor guitar ring out with a uniquely beautiful voice. Yet another excuse for me to play Bach,” said Richard, referring to his 2015 concert tour, Bach on a Bicycle.

He will also be performing some of his own music, as well as taking the audience to Spain and South America.

Some unusual added extras are promised at what will be a typically unpredictable Durrant gig.

The maverick virtuoso, who took his own ukulele on tour last year to play Bach’s Chaconne, will this time be joined on stage by 25 ukulele players and concert harpist Alexandra King in an ensemble that Richard refers to as the ‘Ropetackle Philharmonic Orchestra’.

“Nobody would guess what we are going to play,” says the delighted guitarist. He added mysteriously: “We are treading a tightrope between Bowie, Dvorak and French impressionism.”

Recruits for this unique orchestra have come from Richard’s first Ukulele Circuit Training series, which has been taking place every Wednesday evening at Ropetackle, in Little High Street, Shoreham.

The six-week course ends the night before the performance but another has already been booked due to its enormous popularity.

More details can be found on the Ropetackle website or at www.richard-durrant.com.

Tickets for the concert on February 18 at 7.30pm are £15. Call the box office on 01273 464440.
