VIDEO: Fire on tracks outside Gatwick Airport

Rail services to and from Gatwick Airport are facing long delays after a fire broke out on the tracks.

Southern Rail said a small fire broke out on a section of track outside the airport earlier this morning (Tuesday July 26).

The blaze has since been extinguished but the electrical third rail and surrounding cables have been damaged, the rail service provider said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Trains are running but are being cancelled or delayed by up to 35 minutes due to the issue.

A spokesman for Southern Rail said: “While this equipment is repaired, our trains are unable to use some of the available lines through Gatwick Airport.

Network Rail, who own and maintain the signalling and track, are attending the problem and will be providing updates to us.”
