The lanes have been installed along Broadwater Road between the Grove Lodge roundabout and the former Teville Gate site, turning the road into a single carriageway for drivers in both directions.

Worthing resident Julia Reed started a change.org petition which had 5,000 signatures as of Monday (August 24).

Meanwhile, a counter petition on change.org has been set up urging the council to finish the work. It had 50 signatures and counting within a week of being set up.

James Doyle, a former county and Worthing Borough councillor, started it. The 55-year-old from Cranleigh Road, Worthing, said: “I’m seeing people making arguments without any understanding of what a cycle lane involves or the effect it has on the roads around it. Everywhere where this has been introduced has seen massive improvements in people’s health and enjoyment of the environment.”

He added: “My daughter is going to high school for the first time soon; I would love to see her be abl to cycle safely but rankly it isn’t a safe option for an 11-year-old girl on a bike.”
