Towers pupils become slaves for a day
YEAR three pupils at The Towers Convent School in Upper Beeding were turned into slaves for the day.
They were learning about Romans during a visit to Fishbourne Roman Palace.
Head teacher Clare Trelfa said: “As soon as they arrived, they were turned into slaves and had to cook, clean, learn to write in Latin, build bridges and solve puzzles.
“Lucia was made into Princess Lucicus and Barnaby into Prince Barnicus. They were dressed in the finest silk and were helped to dress by the slaves.
“Fortunately, the prince and princess agreed to set the slaves free to enjoy the rest of the palace.”
The children met a Roman soldier and said he was ‘very scary’, wearing his full soldier uniform and carrying his weapons.
The children asked him many questions to find out about his life as a soldier.
The day finished with a tour of the beautiful mosaics and the Roman garden.
Mrs Telfa added: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their day.”
Fishbourne palace is the largest Roman home in Britain. Visitors can imagine the luxury surrounding this once lavish residence.
