Tourism office closure gets the green light

CLOSURE of Worthing’s tourism information centre has been rubber-stamped, along with a separate series of council officer redundancies this week.

Worthing borough councillors had voted to approve a report recommending the closure of the centre, as well as a management restructuring process, which would see around seven officers made redundant, before the new year.

But the decisions had to be authorised by cabinet members for resources at Worthing and Adur councils, Dan Humphreys and Angus Dunn.

The joint decision report, published on the councils’ website on Tuesday, read: “The executive members agree the closure of the Worthing Visitor Information Centre; approve the redundancies as set out in the report; and agree to fund the associated costs as described in the report from the capacity issues reserve.”

The closure of the tourism office has caused controversy with some town centre traders, who set up a petition in a last-ditch attempt to save it.

It has gathered more than 100 signatures so far.
