Tom Lane completed the run on the first anniversary of receiving a kidney transplant.

The 39-year-old had done the annual 10K four years ago but then suffered from kidney failure for two-and-a-half years before receiving his transplant on September 7, 2013.

He joined more than 1,100 runners exactly a year later to pound the streets of Littlehampton for charity.

Mr Lane smashed his £6,850 Pay For a Day target, with the final figure coming in at £7,166.66, more than enough to pay for an entire day of all care services, both at Chestnut Tree House and out in the community across Sussex.

As the top fundraiser, he has won a pair of trainers, donated by Brooks, and free entry to the Brighton Half Marathon for Chestnut Tree House.

Mr Lane, who is director of asset management at Avtrade in Albourne, said: “I support Chestnut Tree House as it’s such worthwhile charity and I’m always keen to do anything I can to help. As a local charity you really get to see what a difference the money raised makes to the children and families they care for and support.”

Having noticed the date of this year’s 10K, he decided it would be a lovely way to celebrate the anniversary of his transplant.

“I’m not a serious runner,” he said. “For the 10K, I did a few months’ training and I have just started to train for the half marathon.

“To anyone thinking of getting involved, whether running or volunteering, I would encourage them to just give it ago – it’s been a great experience and lots of fun. ”

Mr Lane received more than 50 donations to his JustGiving page.

“I am lucky that I work in an industry where I have such generous colleagues and I’m very grateful to everyone who sponsored me to raise money for this fantastic cause,” he added.
