THE toilet block on Beach Green is back on the market, following a mix up in the autumn.

The site was withdrawn following complaints from residents that half the green on Shoreham Beach had been included.

Now, it has been made clear only the area immediately around the existing toilet block is available for development.

Adur District Council said any new building would need to provide toilets, as well as a beach shower and, potentially, a kiosk to cater to visitors’ needs.

Pat Beresford, executive member for regeneration, said: “This is a unique opportunity to sensitively enhance Shoreham Beach Green.

“The site is not far from the nature reserve and has excellent access to the beach as well as nearby car parking for visitors – as such it is a magnet for the local community and visitors alike.

“I would like to reassure the local community that there is absolutely no intention to put any residential development on Shoreham Beach Green and that the council will want to only consider an application that meets the needs of both our local residents and our visitors.”

The council regard it as an exciting opportunity to redevelop the toilet block into something that benefits an area of such natural beauty.

Beach Green occupies a unique position, just a stone’s throw from the waterfront and a beautiful nature reserve, and it is considered the small toilet block does nothing to enhance these natural assets.

To improve the look, the council is keen to attract a developer who can ‘replace the toilet block with a facility more befitting the green’s charms’.

The site is being marketed by Fleurets and potential developers have until March 31 to submit an application.

It is listed as a seafront café/restaurant development opportunity with a long lease.

It is anticipated the new building will be more than one-storey high and the area of land is given as approximately 1.3 acres, with the final area subject to negotiation.

The council wants it to be a ‘statement building’.
