The historic St Mary’s House in Bramber was targeted in a shocking crime described by its owners as a ‘repulsive act of selfishness and greed’.

On the night of Friday, October 30, it is believed a gang of thieves smashed open the electric gates of the 15th century house and stole around 70 York-stone paving slabs, according to its owners Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton.

The paving, laid out in the 1890s, formed part of the important landscaped frontage of the house, now desecrated by a trail of wanton destruction.

Mr Thorogood said: “The stealing of so many stones throughout the hours of darkness has the stamp of a highly organised plan carried out under great stealth.”

Mr Linton, who has overseen the 30-year restoration of the Grade I listed building of national importance, said: “This repulsive act of selfishness and greed is particularly sad as the house with its lovely gardens is largely supported by some 45 local volunteers, who give so generously of their time and effort.”

St Mary’s, much admired for its typical English character, has earned top five star rating on TripAdvisor and is a draw to thousands of visitors to Sussex from all over the world.
