According to a RNLI spokesperson, the Shoreham all weather and inshore lifeboats were launched at 6.10pm last night after a member of the public spotted a swimmer hanging on to a swimming buoy.

The boats along with the coastguard helicopter carried out a search of the area, west of Shoreham Harbour.

Meanwhile, the swimmer came ashore unharmed, saw the activity and contacted the coastguard to say he had been swimming earlier and had taken a rest using the buoy before making his way back to the shore.

The search was then stood down and the lifeboats returned to station.
