France has declared a national state of emergency and tightened borders following the onslaught, which saw as many as 118 murdered at a rock concert in the Bataclan theatre where three terrorists were holding hundreds of people hostage.

Eleven people were killed during an attack on a Cambodian restaurant and two suicide bombers blew themselves up near the Stade de France where the French football team was playing a friendly against Germany.

Thousands of people have taken to social media to show their support for those affected by the tragedy, with Facebook launching a feature that allows its users in Paris to tell their friends they are alive.

Sussex Police has also taken to Twitter to share sympathies and offer advice for British people in Paris.

Newhaven Town Council will be lowering the French flag at the Memorial Green to half mast as a mark of respect. Mayor of Newhaven Cllr Steve Saunders, Mayor of Peacehaven Cllr Robbie Robertson and Mayor of Telscombe Cllr Wayne Botting will be joined by representatives from the Port Authority for the short service at 11am.

A number of Sussex football teams will also observe a minute’s silence before matches this afternoon. Crawley Town tweeted: “There will be a minute’s silence before today’s game at Exeter as we remember the victims of the attacks in Paris.”

Eastbourne Borough also observed a minute’s silence before their game with Ebbsfleet.

Tomorrow (Sunday, November 15), a three-minute silence will be held at Arundel Town Square to mark the three days of mourning in France.

The silence, organised by Phoebe Kirk, will begin at noon and will be attended by Mayor James Stewart. All are welcome to join.
