Sussex police officer arrested in corruption investigation

The officer, who is a 29-year-old male, has not been named and was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to corrupt, conspiracy to cause misconduct in a public office, and misconduct in a public office.

He is currently in custody at a south London police station, after being arrested at his Sussex home at approximately 6am this morning (Tuesday, August 7).

Also arrested at the same time today was a 37-year-old journalist in his home in north London. He is being held in a separate police station in north London.

Today’s arrests are the result of information provided to police by News Corporation’s Management Standards Committee.

Operation Elveden is the investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police and public officials. It is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and is running in conjunction with Operation Weeting, the Metropolitan Police Service’s inquiry into the phone-hacking of voicemail boxes.

The London Metropolitan Police Service would not confirm whether the officer was based in West or East Sussex.
