An 81-year-old driver died in an accident yesterday morning (August 15), Hampshire Constabulary has said.

The force is appealing for witnesses following what was described as a ‘single-vehicle collision’ on the A287 in Hook, near Basingstoke, shortly after 7.40am.

“Around a third of a mile south of junction five of the M3 a black BMW 730 which was travelling north crossed the grass central reservation and collided with a barrier next to the opposite carriageway,” said a police spokesman.

“No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in a collision with the BMW. No-one else was hurt.

“The driver, an 81 year-old man from Sussex, was taken to Frimley Park Hospital, in Surrey, where sadly he later died.”

Sussex Newspapers has asked police where in Sussex the driver was from and is awaiting a response.
