Surgery’s ‘wonderful new premises’ opens

STAFF and patients at a Shoreham doctor’s surgery celebrated moving into new premises on Tuesday.

Northbourne Medical Centre is now set in the grounds of Southlands Hospital in the re-furbished Thakeham House, in Upper Shoreham Road.

The 1930s building that was part of the original Edwardian infirmary now provides 1,200 square metres of modern, primary care accommodation over three floors, including a pharmacy, and can now care for more than 10,000 patients.

Practice manager Jill Grey said: “After many years of planning, Northbourne Medical Centre has at last seen the completion of its new building.

“The staff and GPs are absolutely delighted to be working from their wonderful new premises.

“It is an absolute honour to be able to practise from a building of significant historical importance to our local area; the totally refurbished building retains all its original character on the outside and is a thoroughly modern general practice on the inside.

“It is fantastic to be able to provide safe, effective, high-quality clinical care to our patients in a spacious new building that we are hopeful in years to come will become a significant part of the local community”.

Services, such as Sussex Dermatology and the Musculoskeletal Service, will run clinics at the centre, and the practice will retain community nursing and expand its counselling team.

The building itself lies next to the Southlands Conservation Authority and has been noted to make a ‘positive contribution to the townscape’.

Architects worked closely with Adur Council and local interest groups to ensure the work respected the building’s history.

Investment firm GPI bought the building and surrounding land from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust and invested more than £3m.

Project director Will Sheardown said: “I think we’ve created a building that has real personality, both reflecting the history of the original building and the character of the practice who will occupy it.

“The end result is a prestigious new facility which will enable the delivery of high quality primary and community services and help the practice provide excellent care to their patients for many years to come.”
